What Does Acupuncture Feel Like?
Most patients are surprised by how relaxing it actually is.
The Sensation
Acupuncture needles are nothing like the needles used for injections or blood draws. They are extremely fine — about the width of a human hair — and most patients feel little to no discomfort when they are inserted.
What many patients do feel is called De Qi — a subtle sensation of warmth, heaviness, tingling, or a mild ache that spreads from the needle site. In TCM theory, this sensation indicates that Qi (vital energy) is being engaged at the point.
Most patients describe their first treatment as surprisingly relaxing — many fall asleep on the table.
Your First Visit
Intake consultation (20–30 min)
Your practitioner will ask detailed questions about your health history, sleep, digestion, stress levels, and the specific concern that brought you in.
Pulse and tongue diagnosis
In TCM, the pulse and tongue provide a detailed picture of your internal patterns. Your practitioner will check both before deciding which points to use.
Treatment (20–60 min)
You will lie comfortably on a treatment table. Needles are placed at specific points — typically 10–20 needles — and left in place for 20–60 minutes while you rest. Many practitioners find that allowing more time for the needles to work produces deeper, longer-lasting results.
Post-treatment
Most patients feel deeply relaxed after treatment. Some notice immediate relief; others see gradual improvement over several sessions.
