Key Finding
Mental disorders affected 1.17 billion people globally in 2023 and became the leading cause of disability worldwide, with anxiety disorders and major depressive disorder contributing the greatest health burden.
A major global study examined mental health conditions across 204 countries from 1990 to 2023, tracking 12 different mental disorders including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Researchers found that 1.17 billion people worldwide were living with mental disorders in 2023—a 95.5% increase in total cases since 1990. Mental disorders are now the fifth leading cause of overall health burden globally and the top cause of disability. The study revealed that anxiety disorders and major depression were the most impactful conditions, with women experiencing higher rates than men. Young people aged 15-19 showed the highest burden of mental health issues. The research used a comprehensive review of health data to calculate not just how many people have these conditions, but how much they affect quality of life and daily functioning. For patients considering acupuncture for mental health concerns, this data confirms the widespread need for diverse treatment approaches. Many people with anxiety and depression seek complementary therapies like acupuncture alongside conventional care to help manage symptoms and improve wellbeing. The study emphasizes that mental health conditions affect people everywhere, regardless of a country's wealth or healthcare resources, highlighting the importance of accessible treatment options. When considering acupuncture for mental health support, seek a licensed acupuncturist with experience treating anxiety and depression who can coordinate care with your mental health provider.
This GBD 2023 systematic analysis assessed prevalence and disability burden of 12 mental disorders across 204 countries from 1990-2023 using Bayesian meta-regression of epidemiological data. Globally, 1.17 billion (95% UI 1.06-1.31 billion) prevalent cases were estimated in 2023, representing a 95.5% increase in cases and 24.2% increase in age-standardized prevalence since 1990. Mental disorders accounted for 171 million DALYs (6.1% of all-cause DALYs), ranking fifth globally for DALYs and first for YLDs (17.3% of global YLDs). Anxiety disorders and major depressive disorder were leading contributors to mental disorder DALYs (ranked 11th and 15th respectively among 304 diseases). Age-standardized DALY rates were higher in females (2239.6 per 100,000) than males (1900.2 per 100,000), peaking in the 15-19 age group. Clinical takeaway: The rising global burden and disability associated with anxiety and depression reinforces the need for multimodal treatment approaches, positioning acupuncture as a valuable adjunctive intervention for mental health conditions in clinical practice.
