Key Finding

Ninety-six percent of surveyed acupuncturists in Australia and New Zealand reported treating women's reproductive health conditions within the previous year, with high treatment prevalence across gynecological, fertility, and pregnancy-related complaints.

What This Means For You

Researchers surveyed acupuncturists in Australia and New Zealand to understand how commonly they treat women's reproductive health issues. The study sent questionnaires to over 3,400 acupuncturists, and 377 responded with information about their practice patterns. The findings revealed that acupuncture treatment for women's reproductive health is extremely common in these countries. Nearly all responding acupuncturists (96%) reported treating women's reproductive health conditions in the previous year. The survey examined three main areas: gynecological conditions, fertility issues, and pregnancy-related complaints. For gynecological problems, the most commonly treated conditions were premenstrual syndrome (90%), menopause symptoms (89%), and menstrual cramps or dysmenorrhea (89%). Regarding fertility, acupuncturists reported treating general fertility concerns not related to IVF (93%), diagnosed fertility conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome or endometriosis (86%), and stress related to infertility (86%). For pregnancy, the most frequently treated conditions were nausea and morning sickness (90%), back or pelvic pain (89%), and preparation for labor before birth (87%). These results suggest that acupuncturists in Australia and New Zealand regularly incorporate women's reproductive health into their practices across all life stages. However, the researchers noted that because only about 11% of acupuncturists responded to the survey, these findings may not represent all acupuncturists in these countries. If you're considering acupuncture for reproductive health concerns, seek a qualified, licensed acupuncturist with experience in women's health.

Clinical Notes for Practitioners

This cross-sectional survey of 3,406 Australian and New Zealand acupuncturists (n=377 respondents, 11% response rate) examined practice patterns for women's reproductive health conditions. Results demonstrated high prevalence of treatment across three domains: 96% treated gynecological conditions, 91% treated pregnancy-related complaints, and 90% treated fertility issues within the previous year. Most commonly treated gynecological conditions included premenstrual syndrome (90.1%, 95% CI 86.2-93.0), menopause (89.4%, 95% CI 85.4-92.4), and primary dysmenorrhea (89.1%, 95% CI 85.1-92.2). For fertility, practitioners reported treating general fertility concerns (93%, 95% CI 89.4-95.5), diagnosed fertility conditions (85.8%, 95% CI 81.1-89.4), and infertility-related stress (86%, 95% CI 81.5-89.7). Pregnancy-related treatments included nausea (90.3%), musculoskeletal pain (89.3%), and labor preparation (86.8%). Clinical takeaway: Women's reproductive health represents a substantial component of acupuncture practice in these regions, though generalizability is limited by response rate.
