Key Finding

Acupuncture performed during controlled ovarian hyperstimulation in fresh IVF cycles and before frozen embryo transfer significantly improved clinical pregnancy and live birth rates, with higher dosages yielding the greatest benefit.

What This Means For You

Can Acupuncture Improve Your IVF Success Rates? Timing Is Everything

If you're going through in vitro fertilization (IVF), you may have wondered whether acupuncture could give your chances a boost. A new scientific review published in the Journal of Integrative and Complementary Medicine suggests that yes, acupuncture can improve pregnancy outcomes — but when you receive it and how often matters enormously.

Researchers analyzed 38 high-quality clinical trials involving nearly 6,000 women undergoing IVF. They looked specifically at how the timing and number of acupuncture sessions influenced clinical pregnancy rates and live birth rates.

Here's what they found: For women doing a fresh IVF cycle, acupuncture was most beneficial when received during the controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) phase — the early stage when medications stimulate egg production. Receiving acupuncture before this phase or only on the day of embryo transfer did not show the same benefits.

For women doing frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycles, the news was even more encouraging. Acupuncture received before the transfer significantly increased both clinical pregnancy rates and live birth rates. In fact, the live birth rate was more than twice as high in women who received acupuncture compared to those who did not.

Dosage also played a clear role. While even lower numbers of acupuncture sessions improved pregnancy rates, only the higher-dosage groups saw significant improvements in live birth rates — suggesting that a more consistent, longer-term course of treatment may yield the best results.

The takeaway for patients is practical: if you're considering acupuncture alongside IVF, starting early and committing to multiple sessions — rather than a one-time visit around transfer day — appears to make a meaningful difference.

Clinical Notes for Practitioners

This systematic review and meta-analysis (38 RCTs, n=5,991) examined how acupuncture timing and dosage influence pregnancy outcomes in IVF-ET cycles. In fresh IVF cycles, acupuncture administered during the controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) phase significantly improved clinical pregnancy rates (CPR: RR=1.33, 95% CI: 1.07–1.65, p=0.01), while pre-COH or day-of-ET acupuncture showed no significant reproductive benefit. In frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycles, pre-transfer acupuncture significantly improved both CPR (RR=1.71, 95% CI: 1.36–2.16, p<0.00001) and live birth rate (LBR: RR=2.40, 95% CI: 1.20–4.79, p=0.01). Dosage analysis revealed that while all dosage groups showed CPR improvements, only the high-dosage cohort demonstrated significant LBR gains (RR=1.75, 95% CI: 1.05–2.92, p=0.03). Clinically, these findings support initiating acupuncture during the COH phase for fresh cycles and well before transfer for FET cycles, with higher treatment frequency associated with more favorable live birth outcomes.
