Key Finding
Chinese herbal medicine significantly outperformed SSRIs in reducing both anxiety and depression symptoms while simultaneously improving erectile function and premature ejaculation in men with sexual dysfunction.
Male sexual dysfunction, including erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation, affects about half of men over 40 and often comes with anxiety and depression that can severely impact quality of life. A new systematic review examined whether Chinese herbal medicine could help address both the physical and mental health aspects of these conditions.
Researchers analyzed 12 clinical trials involving 1,050 men with sexual dysfunction who also experienced anxiety and depression. They compared Chinese herbal medicine treatments to standard antidepressant medications (SSRIs) and measured improvements in both psychological symptoms and sexual function.
The findings showed that Chinese herbal medicine significantly reduced anxiety and depression while simultaneously improving sexual function. Men taking herbal formulas experienced greater reductions in anxiety scores (by about 9 points on standard scales) and depression scores (nearly 10 points) compared to those taking SSRIs. Additionally, erectile function improved by over 3 points on the standard measurement scale, and men with premature ejaculation experienced longer-lasting intimate encounters.
What makes these results particularly meaningful is that Chinese herbal medicine addressed both the mental and physical symptoms together, rather than treating them separately as conventional approaches typically do. This aligns with traditional Chinese medicine's holistic philosophy of treating the whole person rather than isolated symptoms.
For men struggling with sexual dysfunction complicated by anxiety or depression, these findings suggest Chinese herbal medicine may offer a comprehensive treatment option. However, the researchers noted that more high-quality studies are needed. If you're considering this approach, consult with a qualified, licensed practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine who can develop a personalized treatment plan for your specific needs.
This systematic review and meta-analysis examined Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) efficacy for male sexual dysfunction (MSD) with comorbid anxiety and depression. Researchers analyzed 12 RCTs encompassing 1,050 participants across eight databases, comparing CHM interventions to standard treatments including SSRIs.
Primary outcomes demonstrated CHM's superior efficacy over SSRIs in reducing anxiety (SAS: MD=-9.11, 95% CI -11.53 to -6.70, P<0.05; HAMA: MD=-3.89, 95% CI -4.52 to -3.27, P<0.05) and depression (SDS: MD=-9.85, 95% CI -14.07 to -5.63, P<0.05), though HAMD results lacked statistical significance, possibly due to differential treatment responses between PE and ED populations. Secondary outcomes showed significant improvements in sexual function metrics: IIEF-5 scores increased by 3.26 points (95% CI 1.98-4.53, P<0.05) and IELT improved by 1.60 minutes (95% CI 0.82-2.37, P<0.05).
Clinical significance: CHM demonstrates dual efficacy addressing both psychological and physiological manifestations of MSD, supporting integrated treatment approaches. Primary limitation: small study pool restricts generalizability. These findings support CHM as a viable adjunctive or alternative therapy for MSD with psychological comorbidities.
