Key Finding

Combining acupuncture with glucosamine supplementation provided significantly greater pain relief, improved joint function, and reduced inflammation compared to glucosamine alone in elderly osteoarthritis patients.

What This Means For You

Researchers studied whether combining acupuncture with glucosamine supplements works better than glucosamine alone for managing osteoarthritis pain in older adults. Osteoarthritis is a common condition that causes joint pain and stiffness, significantly affecting quality of life as people age.

The study followed 98 elderly patients with osteoarthritis over three years at a hospital in Pakistan. Half the patients took glucosamine hydrochloride tablets only, while the other half received both glucosamine tablets and acupuncture treatments. Researchers measured pain levels, joint function, inflammation markers, and overall quality of life before and after treatment.

The results showed that both groups improved after treatment, but patients who received acupuncture plus glucosamine experienced significantly better outcomes. Those in the combination therapy group reported lower pain scores and reduced inflammation compared to those taking glucosamine alone. They also showed greater improvements in joint mobility, functional ability, and overall quality of life. Importantly, adding acupuncture didn't increase the risk of side effects.

For older adults struggling with osteoarthritis pain, this research suggests that combining acupuncture with standard glucosamine supplementation may provide superior pain relief and functional improvement compared to supplements alone. The integrated approach appears to address both pain management and underlying inflammation more effectively.

While these findings are promising, patients considering acupuncture should discuss this option with their healthcare provider to ensure it's appropriate for their specific situation. When pursuing acupuncture treatment, seek care from a licensed and qualified acupuncture practitioner.

Clinical Notes for Practitioners

This three-year prospective study (September 2021-September 2024) evaluated integrative treatment for osteoarthritis in elderly patients (n=98). Participants were randomized into control (glucosamine hydrochloride tablets, n=49) versus intervention (glucosamine plus acupuncture, n=49) groups. Outcome measures included Traditional Chinese Medicine scores, VAS pain scores, AROM scores, JOA scores, inflammatory biomarkers, and quality of life assessments.

Results demonstrated statistically significant improvements in both groups post-treatment (P<0.05), with the acupuncture-integrated group showing superior outcomes across all measured parameters. The combination therapy group exhibited significantly lower TCM scores, VAS pain scores, and inflammatory markers compared to glucosamine monotherapy (P<0.05). Additionally, AROM, HSS, JOA, and quality of life scores were significantly higher in the integrated treatment group. Adverse event incidence showed no significant intergroup differences (P>0.05).

Clinical takeaway: Integrating acupuncture with glucosamine provides enhanced analgesic effects, improved functional outcomes, and reduced inflammation in elderly osteoarthritis patients without increasing adverse events, supporting multimodal treatment approaches.
