Researchers in China studied whether electroacupuncture could help women with diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) who were undergoing in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET). Diminished ovarian reserve means the ovaries have fewer eggs available, which can make getting pregnant more challenging. The study included 65 women with DOR who were divided into two groups. The control group received standard IVF treatment, while the treatment group received the same standard care plus electroacupuncture. The electroacupuncture treatment involved needles placed at specific points on the back, abdomen, and lower body, with gentle electrical stimulation applied between certain points. Treatments were given three times weekly for three menstrual cycles, continuing until one day before embryo transfer. The results were striking: women who received electroacupuncture had significantly better outcomes across all measures. Their pregnancy rate was 71.9% compared to just 30.3% in the control group. The live birth rate was 56.3% in the electroacupuncture group versus only 15.2% in the control group. The researchers also found that electroacupuncture improved the quality and receptivity of the uterine lining, which helps embryos implant successfully. The study suggests that adding electroacupuncture to standard fertility treatment may substantially improve pregnancy outcomes for women with diminished ovarian reserve. This randomized controlled trial examined electroacupuncture effects on endometrial receptivity and IVF-ET outcomes in 65 women with diminished ovarian reserve. The intervention group (n=32) received standard endometrial preparation plus electroacupuncture at BL 17, BL 23, GV 4, EX-B 8, BL 32, BL 33, ST 25, CV 6, and CV 4. Electrical stimulation (2 Hz/15 Hz, disperse-dense wave) was applied at BL 32-BL 33 and ST 25-EX-CA 1. Treatment frequency was three times weekly for three menstrual cycles until one day pre-transfer. Results demonstrated significant improvements in the electroacupuncture group: clinical pregnancy rate 71.9% vs 30.3% (P<0.01), embryo implantation rate 47.4% vs 18.0% (P<0.01), and live birth rate 56.3% vs 15.2% (P<0.01). Type A endometrium proportion on transfer day was significantly higher in the treatment group (P<0.01). This protocol shows substantial clinical benefit for DOR patients undergoing IVF-ET, with meaningful improvements in both endometrial receptivity and pregnancy outcomes.
