Key Finding
Patients undergoing assisted reproductive technology identified acupuncture as one of the alternative health therapies that positively influenced their treatment experience.
Researchers interviewed 15 individuals who underwent assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatments like IVF to understand what made their experience better or worse. The study, conducted in 2022, used in-depth interviews to identify factors that either helped or hindered patients during their fertility journey.
The interviews revealed several challenges patients commonly face. Many struggled with the high costs and complexity of financing fertility treatment. Communication problems with healthcare providers left some feeling unsupported, and self-administering injectable medications at home proved difficult for many. The unpredictable nature of fertility treatment itself added to the stress.
However, patients also identified several factors that significantly improved their experience. Having a positive relationship with their healthcare provider and feeling involved in treatment decisions made a meaningful difference. Strong social support from family and friends was crucial. Importantly, patients specifically mentioned that complementary therapies, including acupuncture, were helpful during their fertility treatment journey.
What this means for you: If you're considering or currently undergoing fertility treatment, incorporating acupuncture into your care plan may provide additional support during this challenging time. The patients in this study found it beneficial alongside their conventional medical treatments. Acupuncture may help manage the stress and emotional burden of fertility treatments, though it should complement, not replace, your medical care. This qualitative study examined patient experiences during assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment through semistructured interviews with 15 participants who underwent ART with embryo transfer between January 2017 and April 2022. Using constant comparative method coding and reflexive thematic analysis, researchers identified key themes affecting patient experience. Negative factors included treatment financing complexity, inadequate provider-patient communication, challenges with self-administered injectable medications, and treatment unpredictability. Positive factors included strong provider rapport, collaborative decision-making, social support networks, and alternative health therapies, specifically acupuncture. Clinical takeaway: Acupuncture was explicitly identified by ART patients as a beneficial complementary therapy that positively influenced their treatment experience. Practitioners should consider discussing acupuncture as an adjunctive therapy for patients undergoing fertility treatments, as it may address both physical and psychological aspects of the fertility journey. The findings support integrating acupuncture into comprehensive fertility care plans to optimize patient experience and support during ART protocols.
