Key Finding
Patients receiving 6 or more acupuncture treatments within 4 weeks experienced significantly greater reductions in fatigue and anxiety compared to those receiving fewer treatments, though both groups showed improved sleep quality.
A recent Chinese study examined how well a specific acupuncture technique called "Tongdu Tiaoshen" (freeing the Governor Vessel and regulating the spirit) works for treating insomnia in real-world clinical settings. Researchers treated 227 patients with insomnia using electroacupuncture at specific points including Baihui (top of the head), Yintang (between the eyebrows), Shenmen (on the wrists), and Sanyinjiao (on the lower legs) for 30 minutes per session. They compared patients who received fewer than 6 treatments over 4 weeks with those who received 6 or more treatments. The study measured sleep quality, fatigue levels, depression, and anxiety before and after treatment. Both groups showed significant improvements in sleep quality and fatigue levels after treatment. However, patients who received 6 or more treatments experienced notably greater reductions in fatigue and anxiety compared to those who received fewer treatments. Depression scores did not change significantly in either group. The findings suggest that this acupuncture protocol can effectively improve insomnia and related symptoms like fatigue and anxiety, and that treatment frequency matters—receiving at least 6 sessions within 4 weeks appears to produce better results. For patients considering acupuncture for insomnia, this study suggests that committing to a sufficient number of treatments may be important for achieving optimal benefits. This real-world observational study evaluated "Tongdu Tiaoshen" needling for insomnia in 227 patients using propensity score matching to compare treatment frequencies. The protocol involved electroacupuncture at GV20, GV24+, bilateral HT7, and bilateral SP6 for 30 minutes per session. After matching, 37 patients receiving <6 treatments in 4 weeks (low-frequency) were compared with 37 patients receiving ≥6 treatments (high-frequency). Both groups demonstrated significant improvements in PSQI and FSS scores (P<0.05). The high-frequency group showed significantly greater FSS reduction (P<0.05) and significant SAS score improvement (P<0.05) compared to the low-frequency group. SDS scores showed no significant changes in either group. Results remained consistent before and after propensity score matching. Clinical takeaway: This Governor Vessel-based electroacupuncture protocol effectively treats insomnia and associated fatigue and anxiety, with treatment frequency ≥6 sessions within 4 weeks producing superior outcomes for fatigue and anxiety reduction compared to lower frequency treatment.
